Automated Heating and Cooling Control

Maintaining the perfect temperature in your home can be difficult. Plus, fluctuations in the temperature can lead to a higher energy bill.

To eliminate the headache that standard thermostats may cause, you can investigate the various automated heating and cooling control devices available for purchase. However, after conducting some research, you may find that there are many smart temperature-control products available, and you may not know which option to choose. For help understanding how automated heating and cooling control products work, and to discover which product is best for your home, continue reading the sections below.

What Heating and Cooling Control Devices Do

Smart temperature control devices are primarily designed to understand and adjust to the temperatures you program into the device while also changing the temperature when needed in order to improve efficiency and reduce your energy bill. Heating and air conditioning systems that are not efficient lead to unnecessarily high energy bills. This can be fixed by utilizing a system that features multiple zones and can turn off the heating or cooling in unoccupied zones, therefore greatly reducing the amount of energy used throughout the day.

You may also program the system to allow the temperature to drop or rise slightly due to the outside temperature and then return to your preferred comfortable temperature before your family arrives back home. Doing so will help you to manage your consumption of energy.

These devices can also be accessed and controlled by your smartphone or computer, allowing you to adjust the temperature remotely. This can be beneficial especially if you notice that the temperature is higher or lower than you would like it to be. Plus, the devices can learn the schedule of your family in order to properly adjust the temperature on its own, leaving you with less work to do.

Benefits of Heating and Cooling Control Devices

There are many benefits to the utilization of heating and cooling control devices with one of the most popular being your ability to remotely control the temperature of your home from your smartphone or other compatible device. Having the ability to adjust the temperature from wherever you are, whether that is at work, the store, or even on vacation, can be very beneficial.

Most everyone can remember an experience where you came home to a very warm or cold temperature because of a malfunction or mistake regarding the thermostat. With a home-automated heating and cooling device, you can ensure that the temperature is perfectly comfortable before you arrive back home.

Oftentimes, when you leave on vacation, you adjust the temperature to save you money on energy, but when you come back home you have to endure a few uncomfortable hours before the temperature returns to normal. This can be completely avoided with a smart thermostat because you would be able to program your arrival date so that the thermostat begins adjusting the temperature back right before you arrive.

Another benefit is that certain smart thermostat devices also learn to adjust the temperature based on your family’s behaviors. This behavior-based automation can adapt to your temperature preferences even without following a certain per-determined schedule.

The ease of use for most heating and cooling automation devices is another important benefit. Most systems are very simple to install and use, especially when accessible through an app on your smartphone. This added convenience makes it very worthwhile to consider adding an automated temperature-control device to your home.

Top Three Heating and Cooling Devices

While there are many different smart thermostats on the market today, some devices are considered better than others. If you are interested in purchasing a temperature automation device, it is important to consider the pros and cons of each device. To learn more about three of the most popular heating and cooling devices available, read the sections below.

Nest Learning Thermostat

When most people think of smart thermostats, the first product that comes to mind is the Nest Learning Thermostat. This is because Nest was one of the first self-programmable thermostats available. Nest works with most 24V HVAC systems, although you should check to see if your system is compatible before purchasing the device.

A few of the qualities associated with the Nest system are that the thermostat features a very sleek design, it is also very easy to install, and the app is simple to use. Also, the Nest thermostat has sensors that detect motion so that when it detects someone walking nearby it displays the current time and temperature. It can also learn the general schedule of your family in order to best adjust the home temperature when you are away.

One reported disadvantage of the Nest thermostat is the lack of external temperature sensor support, although it is likely that external sensor support will be available in the near future.

Ecobee4 Smart Wi-Fi Thermostat

The Ecobee4 Smart Thermostat is the fourth generation of Ecobee smart thermostat devices. This version has a very similar design to the Nest thermostat and is also considered very simple to use. Ecobee4 works with most HVAC systems, although one downside to the system is that an extension kit is required for homes that don’t have a C-wire included in the wiring of their heating and cooling system.

One of the most popular features of the Ecobee4 is its compatibility with Amazon’s Alexa, which allows you to control the temperature with your voice. Other systems are also compatible with the Ecobee4, including Apple HomeKit and Samsung SmartThings.

Honeywell Lyric Round Thermostat

The Lyric Round smart thermostat is also similar in design to the Nest and Ecobee4 with its round shape and ability to adjust the temperature by spinning the outer ring. The Lyric Round is simple to use, although the setup process is reported to possibly be a bit more difficult than the other systems.

One benefit to the Lyric Round is that it generally learns your family’s behaviors quickly in order to determine what your routines are so that it can appropriately adjust the temperature in your home. It is also compatible with Apple’s HomeKit which is a big bonus for Apple users.

Before You Buy

While the initial purchase price of a smart thermostat may be a bit pricey, it is good to note that in most situations, the energy-saving benefits of owning a smart thermostat can make that initial price well worth it in the end. Before you purchase an automated heating and cooling device for your home, be sure that you have considered the pros and cons to each device available and determined that the device is compatible with your home. Once you have found the right device for your family you can sit back and enjoy the simplicity of having the device monitor your temperature and earn you energy savings with little to no effort on your part.
